Scouting in Sturbridge

Scouted some private property in Sturbridge. Turned out well, I followed a few well worked nature trails but didn't find any new rubs. Found some old rubs on a cedar tree not sure if its from a deer or what. Also found my first fresh scrape this year. Small scrape under a tree looks promising. This will most likely be my opening day spot.
I like to keep my scent out of my spot until opening day. I'll hang another stand at some point tomorrow and continue scouting back up spots.

Scent gun ? Scent system ?

What the hell?
This product supposedly shoots a scent trail 25 feet. It's 40 bucks for the gun and several bucks for the replacements. Hell I bought it anyway and I'll give it a shot, pun intended.

I'll let you know in a few weeks how it works.

Real or fake

Are these real or fake ?

Went for a walk on some public property that leads to some private land I hunt. I was wondering if anyone knew if this was a real rub or something man made. I can never tell .

Three Cams, Two Weeks, One Deer

The title says it all, I left my cameras in the woods for two weeks untouched over a couple scrapes. Came back to check them and all i got was one lousy deer pic and a lot of plot videos of squirrels.

I am pretty discouraged at this point but it lets me know these wont be my opening day spots. I still have one more stand to hang and a few weeks for cam pics.

iPhone deer hunting apps

I finally got the iPhone which is as awesome as I thought it might be. I was doing some scouting and decided to investigate some free deer hunting apps. I am only listing the free ones since I do not feel like wasting any more money on hunting than I already do.

1. The hunting journal by prohuntersjournal.com

The hunting journal is a great place for tech savvy hunters to keep track of their hunts. This app includes moon phases, view previous hunting reports , maps/gps and more. Best part is it's free. Last year I struggle to find a site like this where I could track activity. Now I can take notes in the woods while scouting or in my tree stand.

2. Hunting lite by mmquaint

This hunting flash lite is very versatile. It allows you to track blood using blue light, check the richness of blood. Also has game calls, a white light for getting into the woods before sunrise. Don't need a flash light ? Use this app for survival mode or hunting tips... Also free.

New treestand 9/10/12

Set up two more stands this year. I found a spot on the edge of a swamp. Hoping this spot brings some luck. Above is a pic of the tree, below is the view from the tree. The other picture is the stand which I bought from Dick's for 30 bucks a piece.

First day back in the woods

Some might say I'm a little late to the woods and maybe I am, but I'm setting up my cameras for the fall run. Here's my first spot. It is on some private land in holland ma. It's on some higher ground where spooked deer tend to go during the first few weeks of hunting.
The only good deer I have seen in this area was a small 8pt. Hopefully he has grown and maybe we will catch him on the camera.

First pic is the layout, second is the pic of the stand location and third is a caterpillar that followed me back home.
